Creating & Branding my own label

One of the subjects we are studying is branding and creating an image for your label.
We have the option to either revive an old brand, and suggest new ideas for the image, marketing, or positioning or create our own. and since my dream is to establish my own fashion house in Amman, I'm working now on the presentation for my label to present it tomorrow.

My brand/label will be designing mainly evening, cocktail and wedding dresses, all dresses will be made to measure, and ofcourse doing custom-made designs.
In the presentation we talk about many thing, starting from the vision, mission and values of the brand, character definition, to the archetypes.

I'm also talking about my muse, which she lives a Cinderella story, in a magical enchanted world, she also materializes the dreams of many girls, as well as very beautiful, where you can put anything on her and still look gorgeous.

I've created a mix of pictures that represents my muse, inspirations & brand archetype, which you will get to see before the presentation! :) hope you like it!

I'll never look at Vogue the same way again...

last week I watched The September Issue, honestly I was expecting something else, something slightly better, I mean we were expecting to see things gets canceled and changed last minute esp. at Vogue, some panic, drama, late deadlines, we kind of expected all of this, but nothing was too shocking or unusual. The movie showed a slightly softer side of Anna, maybe not in a direct way, but because we always see her very serious, and doesn't wanna talk, but watching her talking to the camera, smiling , makes you think, after all she is a human, and she has a soft, nice side.

from some of the scenes in the movie, you can see how influential and powerful Anna is, talking to department stores CEO's , checking collections before they are displayed, there is one scene with Stefano Pilati while she was checking his collection, it was obvious she didn't really like it and how he looked terrified! it was nice to see that, designers always look and sound very tough and confident, but not so much infront of Anna, also the snobbish editors I ran into in Paris and how they behave infront of her! :) It was also nice to see how she supports young designers ( Thakoon in the movie), and how if she believes in someone, she can easily boost their business, with probably a single page in the magazine.

Last night I was flipping through the Oct. issue, and looking at the editorials, or the interviews, makes you think how did they end up with this, how many other pictures they took, why did they pick up those pictures, and everything it makes you go through the whole movie again but with the material in hands.

here is a trailer of the movie incase you didn't see it yet, and if you've seen it, let me know what do you think!

Paris SS '10 Fashion Week

It's been a very long time since I wrote anything here! and I feel guilty about it!
BUT I have some nice things to share with you all! :)
Some of you know that I moved to Florence last June, to do a Masters Program in Luxury Management in Polimoda, I was sponsored to do this program by Chalhoub Group in Dubai.

Last week I went to Paris for fashion week, and I had such a great time!
I went to 6 shows! yes 6! :) Chanel, Giambattista Valli, Celine, Elie Saab, Hermes & John Galliano! My favorites were Chanel ofcourse, Giambattista Valli & Galliano.
It was so exciting, because I don't know how I managed to get in! I mean they are very strict with the invitations and everything, yet I managed to go to the best shows!

I met so many people, people I see only in Vogue and Bazaar, I saw almost everyone from US Vogue, editors in Chief, contributing editors, models, muses, you name it!
some of them were very nice and I talked to them, some were very snobbish!
I met Tim Blanks and Candy Pratts Price from Style.com, both were very nice, I met Glenda Bailey Editor in Chief of US Harper's Bazaar, she was very nice too! I met everyone from the Signe Chanel documentary, Mme Cecile & Mme Jacqueline, Virginie Viard & Karl!.

The Chanel show was amazing! when I got in, I couldn't believe that I'm actually inside the Grand Palais for Chanel show! I mean it has always been like a dream, Chanel, Karl, the show, the people and this time it was magical! The set was a farm house in the country side, seconds before the show started everyone was standing and moving around, and when the show started with a roosters sound, everyone was in place in exactly 1 second! :)
Then came the surprise, Lilly Allen came up from nowhere and performed her song "not fair" then disappeared again! it was a great show!

Next day I managed to go to Elie Saab, I was standing in the back, and just like 2 minutes before the show, I found a free seat in the front row , right in front of Nelly Furtado and Dita von Teese, rushed there, and thats how I got my front row seat at Elie Saab.
Couple of hours later I was outside the Hermes show, ofcourse they were not letting people in because the show was about to start, but luckily we managed to find a back door that leads to the backstage, where I met jean Paul Gaultier, Eva Herzigova, Chanel Iman, Isabeli Fontana & caroline Treniti - and by we I mean me and people I meet there who is trying to get in too! :)

The Galliano show was taking place at the same venue, right in the next hall, and there was noway to miss his show, so Michele and I managed, and again please don't ask me how because we were so lucky to get in, the show was about an hour late, and only staff were inside as they were still rehearsing and John was checking everything out, and ofcourse the show was fantastic!
I was so happy to meet Ms. Laila Hamdaoui, a Stylist and Fashion Editor, we had previously met almost 3 years ago in Dubai during the LCDA and she remembered me, she was such a sweetheart! :)
I also went to see my friend Srdjan who launched his own footwear label Aperlai (website coming soon) I loved it ! very nice designs, and he had good responses from buyers and im so happy for him! I also met Zoe Saldana at Giambattista Valli's showroom the day after the show and we had a small chat on what she was picking from the collection. I got my copy of The Sartorialist and I met Scott and got it signed, I met him first in Milan but all bookshops had ran out of the book, but I'm happy i bought it from Paris, you know, it's Paris! ;) I met Mario Testino again (first time in Milan also) he told me he maybe coming to Jordan soon (hope I'll be there). Models were so tall, and more beautiful in person, esp. Claudia Schiffer & Natalia Vodianova.
The sole purpose of my visit to Paris was to try to get an internship with Giambattista Valli in December, unfortunately he was very busy, but I managed to send him an email asking him for it, so wish me luck with that!

Over all it was a great trip! and if I'm in Paris again, I would for sure do it all over again and try to get in! :) RTW fashion week is great, but I still wanna experience Haute Couture, so January maybe? ;) Please find some pics on my twitter account.

A 10 years old Queen!

Yesterday marked the 10th anniversary for Queen Rania & King Abdulla's taking the throne.
For the occasion, a Royal Parade took off from the Royal palace to Amman's stadium where national celebrations were taking place.

During the past 10 years Jordan has changed alot, whether in the IT sector, and having Jordan called The cradle of internet start-ups, projects that supports and works for a better local community, and very recently, launching the Madrasati project that helps local schools.

I remember on June 9th 1999, watching the coronation and royal parade, and thinking how does queen rania feels now? she must be excited, afraid, overwhelmed, first she was a next-door type of girl, leading a normal life in Amman, then marrying Prince Abdulla must have changed her life, and now she is Queen of Jordan! I cant wait to ask her that! :)

On the other hand, It was nice to see the then 29-year-old, youngest Queen of the world making fashion headlines, and being mentioned among the best-dressed people of the world! I remember her first official visit to France in Dec. 1999 when she wore a burgundy GFF dress at a dinner ceremony and a Chanel outfit while visiting the Musee de Louvre, thats when the the whole world started paying attention to the Queen! And for so many years, she's been on the list of Vogue January issue's annual best dressed list & In the september 2001 issue of the magazine, there was an article about the new queen, Mario Testino Flew to Jordan and took amazing pictures for the queen at the royal palace and Jerash ( she also appeared in the magazine in March 2009 ).

Yesterday, Queen Rania wore the same dress 10 years ago on her coronation day, designed by Elie Saab, but with some changes, like wearing a belt and doing something with the sleeves. I met the head seamstress, Ms. Sophie in 2006 at ES workshops in Beirut, who came to Amman to do the fittings for the queen then, she said that it was such a nice and touching experience.

Queen Rania looked more fresh, younger yesterday than she did 10 years ago, wearing a smaller tiara, a more simple hair do and make up. She is gracing the cover of HELLO magazine's latest issue.

She is an inspiration & muse to many fashion designers, and friends with the likes of Giambattista Valli, Ricardo Tisci, JPG & of her favorite brands, Prada, Burberry, YSL & ES.
She is such a cool Queen! I mean, she twitters! she has a facebook page, she wrote some journals from a trip to India & NYC recently & attends fashion parties, like the MET's gala in 2007!

Today marks the royal couple 16th wedding anniversary so congratulations and looking forward to more fashion statements by the queen! :)

Queen Rania in DC

Gorgeous Rania of Jordan is in Washington DC this week, accompanying her husband King Abdalla.

On Tuesday, she launched the April 20-26 Global Action Week organized by the Global Campaign for Education (GCE) to fight illiteracy worldwide with 75 million children currently out of school. “It’s time for a new chapter in the global illiteracy story.”

Yesterday, she delivered a key note at the 8th Annual Global Philanthropy Forum Conference in DC. “The need for global philanthropy is more urgent than ever before”. The Queen said.

Holding a jar of home-made apple jam in her hand, the Queen explained how the answer can be found in the story of a 9 years old Jordanian girl, Leila, who showed appreciation to her community through a remarkably simple gesture. “Leila’s lesson is that philanthropy means so much more than just giving money,” Queen Rania said as she narrated the little girl’s extraordinary story. For more about her speech, please click here.

Later in the day, The queen, and her 3 children, took a walk down the streets of Washington, and enjoyed the nice weather.

She went out for a jog too :)

I wonder why Rania haven't met Michelle Obama..yet! I remember in a recent interview they asked her about Michelle, and she said: "I havent met her yet, but I'm sure she is nice". :)

I wonder if the Queen is planning to stay in the States until May 4th to attend the annual MET ُexhibition Gala, or as some call it "Oscars of the east". This years theme: Model as Muse, Co-chairing Marc Jacobs, Justin Timberlake & Anna Wintour. Queen Rania attended the 2oo7 MET gala: Poiret King of fashion and wore Giambattista Valli. I hope she will be attending! :D

And I'm guessing we'll see her on the Best Dressed list of Style next week ;)

Valentino Garavani, The last Emperor.

Valentino: The Last Emperor is a documentary about the life and work of Italian legendary fashion deisgner, Valentino Garavani. It takes you inside the magical, lavish, glamorous world of Haute Couture and the world of Valentino.

The film captures Joy, happiness, as well as tension in preparation for the shows. Life with his business/life partner Giancarlo Giammetti. The glamorous life, the mansions, the yachts, the prive jets, the contacts and the ultimate power in fashion!

Valentino celebrated his 45 years in fashion with a 3 days extravagant festivities in Rome between 6th and 8 July 2007. Festivities started on July 5th with a dinner for Valentino's assistants and employees July 8th with the launch of a perfume and a brunch at the French Academy of Villa Medici.

On July 6th an exhibition entitled "Valentino in Rome, 45 years of style"was launched at the ancient sacrificial altar Ara Pacis showcasing Valentino's most important creations from the past 45 years. On July 7th a fashion show for his Fall '07/'08 Haute Couture was held for 1000 people, and for the first time in 16 years, it was held in Rome, not in Paris.
The festivities brought celebrities, royalities and fellow designers from all around the world to pay homage to the designer.

Last year, I was very lucky to be able to attend the exhibition Valentino - Thémes et Variations' at the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. There were alot of his famous designs, and one can go very close and see all the details, it was the best €8 I've spent in my life (well, almost :P) .
I like what Valentino said about himself: "designing dresses is the only thing im good at. I am a disaster at everything else".

Please read a small interview with with Matt Tyrnauer here.
I cant wait to see this movie! If you've seen it already, let me know what u think!

My Winning Dress!

Yesterday I won 3rd place for the "Best Design Awards" during the annual bridal exhibition in Amman.
The show was for the GSC (Garments Design & Training Services Center) Students who have recently attended a pattern making course.
12 designers competed among each other, the competition was very close!

My dress was originally designed to my very dear friend, Natasha, for her wedding day.
Natasha is the first bride I dress, and she had put so much trust in me, and I thank her again :D
14 meters of chiffon were embroidered with around 30,000 pieces of beads and ostrich feathers.

I first Joined the GSC last year, for a Fashion Marketing course in Amman, they organize courses in collaboration with Polimoda Fashion Academy in Florence, Italy.
GSC is now the single institute that provides people interested in Fashion in Jordan with this level of proficiency. Also last year, I went to Tunisia with the GSC, for a 10 days workshop during the bi-annual TexMed event. Later I went to Florence for a summer course in Fashion Design (it was a great, beneficial experience). Late 2008, I Joined the GSC for a pattern making course that lasted for 3 Month. Earlier this year, I went to Istanbul with them to attend the 3-days IFF (Internationl Fashion Fair).

Things have been changing a lot recently at the GSC, I mean back in 2007 there were so many promises but nothing was actually happening! But with the new management that took over early 2008, everything has changed a lot! Great & interesting courses are being organized, people are loving it, I got to travel to places I've always wanted to go to with the GSC. Students also enjoy a 50%-65% discounts on courses, supported by the Education Support Fund.
Special Thanks to Mrs. Raghad & Ms. Dina, we really appreciate everything :)

My prize was a Fashion Business and Marketing course in collaboration with Polimoda! :)
For more information about the courses offered by the GSC, Please call: 06-5620056

Let me know what you think.

The most beautiful woman in the world?

Is she Gisele Bündchen? Jennifer Connelly? Penélope Cruz? or Angelina Jolie?
A poll by Vanity Fair magazine is asking : "Who is the most beautiful woman in the world?".

Well, come to think about it now, I've always thought Gisele is the most beautiful woman, ever since I started seeing her in magazines, and her star began to shine, there was something about her, her hair, her amazing walk, her smile, posture, everything, even till this day, when there is an advertising with Gisele in it, it instantly get people's attention, they say Sex Sells but certainly Gisele sells!. I remember I voted for her in 1999 during the VH1/Vogue fashion awards and she won model of the year that year! :D she was wearing that famous D&G outfit, the very short black skirt, wide open white shirt, and shiny silver bra!

Also that year, Queen Rania was crowned Queen of Jordan, and I've always believe she is the most beautiful woman in the world, and the most stylish one too! I became this crazy fan of her, having all pictures for her, reading all her interviews in all magazines, and until this day, she is certainly my favorite.

Also on the list, Russian beauty icon, Natalia Vodianova, and she is, with no doubt, gorgeous!
Natalia started modeling at 15, 2 years later she signed a contract with VIVA Modeling management and moved to Paris. Natalia has been featured in so many editorials, campaigns, and and on magazines covers, she has walked in more 175 runway shows for Haute couture and RTW. In 2002, Natalia married British real estate heir, Justin Portman (she wore Tom Ford for her wedding) and has 3 childern.
Vodianova is a founder and the President of the Naked Heart Foundation, a philanthropy that strives to provide a safe and inspiring environment in which to play for every child living in urban Russia.

And last but definitley, not least, Freida Pinto! I am crazy about her these days! As you all know, Freida was the star of Slumdog Millionaire, and she's been making beauty headlines for sometime now! what I like about Freida is her skin color, hair and beautiful smile! Do you think she'll be 007's next girl!? :D

I dont know who to pick! I mean I love 4 of them, but each in a different way! I would love to see Gisele walking down the catwalk in one of designs, Queen Rania is more like a muse, and the ultimate person I would realllly love to dress, Natalia, would love to have her doing my campaigns, and Freida, well, I would simply love to dress her!

So what do you think? who is the most beautiful of them? And in your opinion, who is the most beautiful woman in the world? - would love to hear from you!

Olivier Theyskens is still at Nina Ricci...

Well, I was happy to see that Olivier Theyskens is still at Nina Ricci, after alot of rumors and speculations that he is leaving Nina Ricci, and that, Marc Jacob's right hand for 10 years at LV, Peter Copping.

But On March 5th, he presented his Fall/Winter '09 RTW collection in Paris, which was reportedly a stunning collection! Rumors started after Theyskens latest Spring/Summer collection, where buyers didnt receive the collection very well, also since Theyskens refuse the idea of the brand going commercial, by designing an accessories line of handbags and other leather goods. I dont know why I have a feeling that the rumors had served the brand as a marketing thing... I mean now they got everyone talking about whats gonna happen to the brand, or who is going to replace Olivier, and that sales havent met up to the expections, brought a lot of attention to the brand, the designer, the latest collection. And since nothing is yet confirmed, there will still be talks about this, untill we see whats gonna happen in October.

Rumor still has it that
Mario Grauso, the head of Puig Fashion Group, which owns Ricci fired Theyskens, whose contract is still valid till October, which technically means he will still be presenting another collection for the brand, SS '10 in September.

I loved Oliviers work for Rochas! I mean it was sad to see the brand closing down, and I thought Rochas Fall 2005 RTW collection was a great collection by all means! the shape, the colors, it was amazing, and i was very happy to see that Queen Rania got her share of this collection! she wore one to an event in India back in 2006, and another one later on at the Time's 100 most influential people party in NYC.
He also designed Lauren Santo Domingo's Two Wedding dresses, see pics here.

Well, I hope things work out between Theyskens and Ricci, and to have his contract renewed!
Another reason why I like him even more, is that because I found out that we both share the same birthdate! :P

Check out pics below for Nina Ricci's latest collection, and the insanly-not-wearable-extremely high heels!

€375m. for YSL Art Collection

For three days earlier this week, YSL's longtime partner, Pierre Bergé and Christies Paris auctioned over 730 art pieces that belongs to the late Yves Saint Laurent and raised a total of around €375m beating the estimates of €200m-€300m.

The collection of paintings, sculptures and furniture filled the late designer’s duplex apartment at 55 Rue de Babylone and Pierre Bergé’s Rue Bonaparte apartment is one of the major collections ever to be auctioned in Paris. It includes pieces by Warhol, Goya & Henri Matisse.

YSL's original logo, hand-lettered by graphic artist Cassandre, from 1961 (not for sale).

One piece of furniture made a record high of €21.9m, It is now the world's most expensive armchair, created by the Irish designer Eileen Gray. At €21.9m (£19.6m), I doubt that anyone will sit on it ever again.

Despite the financial recession we are in now, French dealers suggest that the recession may have actually helped the high bids, because the rich people want to put their money in a safe investment! Also ofcourse the name of the late designer helped increase the bids as well.

The Library

Talking numbers, on the first evening alone, the sale raised €206m, almost €36m for the Matisse painting of 1911 The Cuckoos, a Blue and Pink Rug and €8.9m for a couple of ordinary perfume bottles, declared to be "ready-made" art, and signed by the surrealist, Marcel Duchamp.

The Auction was held at the gorgeous Grand Palais, the world’s largest and prestigious exhibition hall. Around 33,000 people queued to see the collection last week. Access to the auction room ha has been strictly controlled, with potential buyers having to prove they had access to at least €500,000 in ready cash.

Two controversial items, a bronze Rat and Rabit heads, which were reportedly stolen from the Summer Imperial palace in China, in 1860 at the end of the second Opium War. The item were reportedly sold for €15m each.

Best Dressed at the Oscars 2009

It is Oscars time again this year, beautiful stars, gorgeous dresses, and LUCKY designers! :)
There were many nicely dressed stars, among them, Angelina in a black Elie Saab Couture , SJP in Dior Couture, Halle Berry in Marchesa, Nicole Kidman in L'wren Scott, and many other.

But only 5 gorgeous stars and dresses made it to the list. Penelope cruz is a double winner here! she looked amazing in a vintage, 60 year old dress by Pierre Balmain, I just thought she could have done her hair better, and she also won an Oscar as a best supporting actress for Vicky Christina Barcelona.

Jennifer Aniston wore Valentino Couture and looked amazing! Anne Hathaway wore Armani Privé, Evan Rachel Wood in Elie Saab Couture, and last but not least the gorgeous Vanessa Hudgens in Marchesa. I loved Vanessa's looks, she reminded us of young Audrey Hepburn.

Will post some of Oscars after party pictures soon! ;)

The September Issue

The September Issue is a new documentary that premiered Jan. 16th at the Sundance Film Festival and won the Excellence in Cinematography Award.

The documentary talks about the preparation of Vogue's Sep. 2007 Fall Issue. The biggest issue ever published in the history of magazines, of 840 pages.
Director R.J. Cutler, follows Vogue's Editor in Chief, Anna Wintour, and her larger than life team for 8 months, Jan.-Aug. 2007 and focuses on Sept. Issue of Fall fashion.
R.J. approached Ms. Wintour 2 years before they started shooting.

"He seemed very committed to the idea of what goes into the issue and obviously that is something in particular I'm interested in, because I do feel there is a fascinating side to fashion." Ms Wintour said about Director Cutler, she continues to say "I'm thrilled that it is a creative process and the agony , the joy, the incredible hours and passion that everyone who works at Vogue puts into the magazine, which is what R.J. decided to focus on."

Grace Coddington, Wintour's colleague for 20 years, the magazines creative director, and genius stylist wanted nothing to do with the making of the film, to a point where she told Ms. Wintour that she would quit if she allows them to film!!

"The first thing she said to me was GO AWAY! She couldn't throw us of the office, because she is not the boss! Anna is the boss and she had invited us in. But she wasn't happy to see us. And when Grace is unhappy to see you, that's not the place anyone wants to be in. God Bless her, she eventually gave us a chance." Director R.J. said.

This is a documentary that I literally can NOT wait to see. I mean do you realize that it means to be able to go behind all the closed meetings, the preparations, the photo shoots, backstage at the shows, everything that goes into the process of making the issue? To see inside the REAL Vogue! We've seen some familiar things in The Devil Wears Prada, and SATC the Movie, but this is going to be the real Vogue, The real Anna, the world of fashion, something we have always dreamed of! The Documentary will hit theaters this Sep., until then, I'll survive on YouTube Clips! :)

Will update you about it.
